Artist's Description

Bornholm has four round churches. They are unique, one doesn’t find another in the rest of the country.

They were built between 1150 and 1250. This era wasn’t just peaceful here. Venetian pirates attacked the shores of the Baltic Sea, and internally the church and the king were figting each other. Since people her were practical, the churches were built as small fortresses also. They were originally built with flat roofs and a guard’s walkway all way around for the guards to keep an eye for any foes or crusade ships coming in for supplies.

It was also the time of the crusades to the east. Bornhom was practically situated on the way to Estonia and Latvia. The island was used as a stop for supplies. Hence these churches were also built as supply buildings, behind the 3 –6 feet thick walls lots of thing could be safely stored.

It is said, that the merits of building a church round is twofold. Firstly, it’s easier to defend, and, secondly, the Devil couldn’t hide in the corners!

Now these round churches are in use as ordinary churches. They are great tourist attractions as well.

I took this yesterday, I think the soft evening light was good for this.
