Paul Tells His Mom AKA Chapter 6 of Blue goose Steak and Moose

Paul is packing up his stuff in his room whilst his mother is standing in the doorway smoking a cigarette and drinking a martini. “I’ll call you when I have an address so you can ship the rest of my stuff to me.” Paul says, as he works diligently.

“Don’t you think you should call before you just pack up and go? You don’t even know if you’ve got a job and you’re moving up there.” Paul’s mother says to him as she drains her Martini.

“There are quite a few restaurants in Portsmouth. If this doesn’t work out I’ll try some of the others.”

“I don’t know why you’re in such a rush to move to New Hampshire. The only people there are drunks and wife swappers.”

“How the hell do you know? You’ve never even been to New Hampshire.”

“I know. You’ve never been there either, Paul.” She points out to her only son. “So, how do you know there are more restaurants in Portsmouth?”

“I got it off the Internet, I was trying to get some more information on the Blue Goose Steak and Moose, unfortunately they don’t have a web site.”

“Probably because it is owned by some back woods inbred. I thought you were going to go back to work at my brother’s place in Hartford. He loved it when you were working there.”

“It was a great job, but that was high school. I just graduated from culinary school, I’m a bit above the cheese steak stand now. Uncle Nick will understand.”

“Ok, ok. You just run along up North and cook your blue geese with the wife swappers. I’m going to make myself another drink. Would you like one for the road?” She asks, as she leaves the doorway of her sons room to make her way to the bar in the den.

“Sure, I’ll have what you’re having.” He says, not far behind her with two small bags that he places by the door in the den when he enters the room. After placing his bags by the door he sits on the couch. “I love you Mom but I have to go.”

“I know.” She responds as she hands Paul his drink and sits next to him on the couch.

“Maybe I’ll move up there next year when I retire.”

“I thought you were going to Florida?” Paul says, worrying slightly that his mother is going to move in with him.

“I’ll still do the winters there.”

“ Well I got to get going, my flight leaves soon. I don’t want to be late.” He gulps down his mother’s famous extra dry Martini and walks over to put his empty glass on the bar, his mother right on his heels. As he turns to walk to the door she embraces him. “You Ok Ma`?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Pulling away.

Paul Mills finishes saying goodbye to his one and only mother; grabs his bags and walks out the door of his mother’s house. She stands there for a moment staring at the door before she goes back to the bar to whip up another round of Martini’s. As she is standing there mixing her drink one stray tear manages to slide from her cheek and meet the Martini as it fills the glass from the shaker.
