Artist's Description

Native to Europe from the British Isles through Central Asia east the Himalaya region including Bhutan.
Cultivated in gardens planted on poor soils; escaped and became naturalized in Eastern Australia and North America. Pioneer on disturbed, sunny, dry, well-drained soils up to 1,800 – 3,000 m above sea level.

Dye made from the flowers was used already long time ago, the Old French (Provencal) mauve word adopted in English describe the dye color.
