Artist's Description

The about eighty species belonging to the Crocus genus is endemic from coastal and sub-alpine areas of Central and Southern Europe, the islands of the Aegean Sea, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia to western China. The are hardy bulbous relatives of the Iris family.

Dried stigmas of Crocus flowers are the supply of the astronomically prized and priced saffron, rich in cell division regulators, including about the biologically most active cell division regulator compounds produced by any living organism.
