Artist's Description

This photo is part of a series of kinetic light paintings. I make handheld movements with a DSLR, intentionally painting with available light. The camera itself is the paintbrush, gathering light while I expose the frame for 1-3 secs. In this case, I’m capturing the light of a California sunset.

I’m pretty bored when I go shooting at home. The same landmarks, over and over again. I lay in wait for some extraordinary lighting to capture the beach and California coast. In between HDR landscapes, I find myself playing with light in different ways. With this process, you can walk up to an ordinary flower bed, set up your exposure and focus and begin painting with the flower petals. It’s best to find low contrast scenes, with some amazing highlights. I pushed the contrast in this particular photo to make the sunlight coming through the trees pop even more., making it appear like fire. This shot is the original crop.
