Artist's Description

Taken on December 14 2006 – the fatal day that the Victorian bushfires burst and raged through Gippsland. This was taken on the central Gippsland plains beneath what is called a pyrocumulus cloud – effectively the local scale atmospheric environment has become conditionally unstable due to the extra heating caused by the intense bushfires and has enabled cumulus clouds to develop above the fires. If instabiulity is great enough these they can actually become thunderstorms like this and drop lightning which may ignite more fires ! These ‘pyro-Cb’s ’ on this particular day also actually dropped 3mm of black sooty rain..
BUT – most important to note is that at about the time of this photograph a man lost his life some 20km away fighting this exact blaze. (some on this day were deliberately lit…)

Canon EOS A2, Fuji Velvia 50.
