Artist's Description

Shichi-go-san (seven-five-three) is a festival held in November each year where families celebrate three and seven year old girls and three and five year old boys.

Shichi-go-san is a rite of passage celebrating a child’s transition to middle childhood where everyone gets dressed up for the day in traditional or formal western attire and visits a shrine to wish for a long and healthy life.

Everyone is out with their cameras taking photos and celebrating with other families. It’s a wonderful event to be part of as families will ask you to take photographs of their special day.

These are a few images from 2011, capturing some of the pride, happiness and beautiful setting at the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo.

Portraits near the entrance to the shrine.
