Bridgwater, United Kingdom

Microbiologist and photographer living in Somerset in the southwest of England. I specialise in nature photography, from wildlife to...

As a trained microbiologist, I have had the opportunity to live and work in three different countries (including my native UK), which has probably coloured my outlook on life, as well as given me the opportunity to experience different cultures and see new sights. In addition to that, I have visited a number of cities and towns to attend congresses. I also help to run a computer help site, where I have been exposed to some very good digital art (directly and indirectly). I was initially interested in photography as a teenager, coupling it with other hobbies. I sort of left it behind though when I started to focus more on my career. After several years in the creative doldrums (apart from on holiday), I decided it was about time that I started nurturing my creative side again and bought a Canon EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi) back in October 2007 before upgrading to a 40D, then the new 7D. I now use a combination of the 7D for wildlife and the 5D MkII for landscapes (and some wildlife). One of my goals is to get back to Norway and Greece to capture some of the scenes I should have captured while living there.
In February 2011, I published my first book through Blurb, titled “A Journey with Nature”. It relates my experience with nature, as I observe and enjoy it. I have since corrected a few typos and formatting errors and re-published it as a second edition. It is now available in two formats, from Blurb, as a text only pocket book and a larger format with photographs to illustrate the stories. It is also available in a Kindle electronic version from Amazon.

Inari Aurora Timelapse Video

Recently, I visited Finland for the first time. After an overnight stay in Helsinki, we flew to Ivalo, in Finnish Lapland, before travelling a further 50 minutes northwards to Inari. We were met by the Aurorahunters team, who were guiding us for the few days were there. The night we arrived was solid cloud cover, so we took the opportunity to rest, ready for the long nights ahead of us. The first…

Canon 100-400 Zoom Lens for Sale

I’ve been pretty busy with work lately, but I’ve finally got around to listing my Canon 100-400 telephoto zoom lens for sale on eBay. The starting price is £750, but I’m hoping to get a little more than that, as most sell second-hand for over £900, being close to £1100 new. / For anyone who is looking for this lens, it is in near mint condition, with minor scuff marks on the hoo…

Kingfisher on a Tree Prints

Thanks to the one or two people who purchased two prints of Kingfisher on a Tree last month. Sales are always appreciated, but doubly so when they are mounted or unmounted prints.

First Impressions of the New Canon EOS 5D MkIII

On Sunday, I attended Focus on Imaging. My main aim was to have a look at the 5D MkIII and 1D X (although I never did get the chance to see the 1D X in the end). A few days before the exhibition, I received an invite from Canon Professional Services (as did all members) to attend a presentation/demonstration on a first come first served basis, so I rushed to the CPS area on arrival to book my ses…
