Inari Aurora Timelapse Video

Recently, I visited Finland for the first time. After an overnight stay in Helsinki, we flew to Ivalo, in Finnish Lapland, before travelling a further 50 minutes northwards to Inari. We were met by the Aurorahunters team, who were guiding us for the few days were there. The night we arrived was solid cloud cover, so we took the opportunity to rest, ready for the long nights ahead of us. The first two nights out were a challenge, the first was more of a chase to find the cloud clearances thna a chase to find the Aurora, but we did strike lucky and found a gap for a reasonable display. The second night was clearer, but the display was very weak. Predictions didn’t look good for the final night, as solar activity was very low, but we were lucky enough to witness one of the best displays of t…

Canon 100-400 Zoom Lens for Sale

I’ve been pretty busy with work lately, but I’ve finally got around to listing my Canon 100-400 telephoto zoom lens for sale on eBay. The starting price is £750, but I’m hoping to get a little more than that, as most sell second-hand for over £900, being close to £1100 new.

For anyone who is looking for this lens, it is in near mint condition, with minor scuff marks on the hood.

First Impressions of the New Canon EOS 5D MkIII

On Sunday, I attended Focus on Imaging. My main aim was to have a look at the 5D MkIII and 1D X (although I never did get the chance to see the 1D X in the end). A few days before the exhibition, I received an invite from Canon Professional Services (as did all members) to attend a presentation/demonstration on a first come first served basis, so I rushed to the CPS area on arrival to book my session. I have written this article as a first impression, as well as some insight, opinions and impressions of the CPS representative.…

The session lasted one hour, during which time, the rep gave an overview of some of the salient features and compared it to the 1D X, to which it arguably most resembles. However, we didn’t have a chance to compare it to the 1D X at that time, although there was bot

Photographer of the Year Entry

After deciding not to enter last year, I’ve decided to bite the bullet and enter the Digital Camera Photographer of the Year competition. I’ve always felt that the competition is sometimes more about the editing than the actual taking of the photograph, but I feel that I’ve some images that are creative enough in other ways to be worth giving a try. So far I’ve only entered three, but will consider more over the next few days.

First Book Published on Blurb

I have just published my first book on Blurb. It’s been a project for a while now, but the past week or so, I finally put the finishing touches together. It’s basically an account of my experiences with nature, both at home in the UK and in Nepal back in 1994. As an added touch, I have also included a number of photographs.

Call for CollaborationTake 2

I’ve already posted a photo for writers to have a go at, but this time, I’m going to turn the tables. This poem stirs up images for me, but it is simply too far from my comfort zone to come up with a suitable photo or other artwork. I’m thinking reportage style, perhaps with heavy processing or maybe no processing at all, just subdued lighting. I challenge anyone who fancies getting their teeth into it to come up with something.

Throwing Down the Gauntlet

Earlier today, Redbubble threw down the gauntlet to artists and writers to produce some collaborative work. The aim is to increase collaboration between RB members to produce conceptual art and writing. Of course, not only does it serve to stretch the imagination, it is also a way to increase exposure, hopefully increasing the chances of sales and views.
This photograph, titled Jurassic Evening, was a bit of a milestone image for me, so has some memories attached to it. It also brought an image to mind, beyond what is shown, so for me, it achieved that elusive goal of photographers to tell a story. The question is, what story unfolds for you when you look at it? So that is the gauntlet that I am laying down, what can the talented writers at RB come up with or perhaps there is an idea for i…
