Family Business

The widowed mother was in the kitchen preparing an evening meal of leftovers from the night before. In the parlor, off to the side of the kitchen, three sisters worked together to create woolen thread.

As the elder sister, Clotho, spun the wheel of her distaff, she made the comment that she was running out of wool. Lachesis, the middle sister who’s job was to measure the length, replied that there was not enough wool left to complete the proper length. Very coolly, Atropos, the youngest of the family chimed , “Well, I guess we will have to cut this one short.”

The mother, overhearing their burden, poked her head into the parlor and said, “Tonight’s dinner is a cold shoulder of lamb, for there is not enough wood to kindle a fire.”

Her three daughters replied in unity, “Yes, Mother, we understand.”

Their mother, Gaia, went back to preparing the dinner table and wondered, “Do they really understand?”
