Turkey is a remarkable country: a staunchly secular yet Muslim nation that is a relatively young republic founded by Ataturk following the fall of the Ottoman Empire after WWI. It is full of history and centuries-old cultures and traditions, an amazing land of contrasts.
In this image taken in Istanbul, there is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (aka. the ‘Blue Mosque’) in the background, built 400 years ago. In the middle are various buses and cars: inventions of some 100 years ago.
In the foreground are young military cadets who are arriving at the Topkapi Palace, possibly on an education excursion. They represent Turkey’s present and future: the next generation of guardians of her deeply supported secular and democratic traditions. The lone soldier in uniform on the left represents authority but ultimately the overwhelming force of the people’s voice will rule the day.
