A Grandfathers Parting Gift

The smell of oil paints
Riding in his old Holden called the ‘Bull’
Memories come flooding back

Summer holidays at Wye
Fishing off the rocks
Memories that were ours

Being taught simple tunes
On the piano at Jesse St and Wye
Pop I was always listening

He’s sitting at the drafting board in the back room at Jesse St
Talking to me as he draws
Pop did you know I loved you?

Nights at the Rookery Nook Hotel
Playing hooky and drinking ‘fire engines’
Pop did you know how happy I was?

Being comforted when the winds blew strong through the Wye Valley
He assured us that the house would not blow away
Pop I know you loved me

Going to see him march on ANZAC Day
Dressed in uniform, a man so fine
Pop did you know I was proud?

Memories were your parting gift
Our family was your legacy
Pop I would like to thank you
