Artist's Description

Captain Charles Harris (16??-1723) joined the notorious pirate Edward Low. He captained the sloop Ranger in the Action of 10 June 1723. While Low escaped, Charles and his crew were captured and hanged in Newport, Rhode Island.

This flag was also flown by Francis Spriggs and other consorts of Edward Low who considered himself Admiral of their squadron, taking for himself the “Death in Red” roger to distinguish his flagship.

A modified version of this flag is incorrectly attributed to Blackbeard who historically is only recorded as flying the standard Death’s Head.
