Artist's Description

These Burchell’s zebras (Equus quagga burchelli) had been loitering and grazing on the other side of the river. By sunset, for some reason they felt the need to cross to the other side. This was dangerous for them because crocodiles lurked nearby.

Zebra stripes appear in different patterns, unique to each individual. Apparently they can tell each other apart, babies knowing exactly which one’s their mama. Zebras have never been domesticated.
