Artist's Description

Groundhogs (also called Woodchucks & Whistle Pigs) are related to the squirrel. They are one of the few true winter hibernators in North America – hibernating in their dens most of the winter. This groundhog has been a resident in an embankment above a ditch on the side of the road for a few years now. S/he is quite active this time of year and is easy to spot while everything is still pretty dead and Spring has not taken hold. I caught sight of her sitting at the mouth of her den (early May 2015). Belyeas Cove, New Brunswick, Canada. Captured on a Canon EOS Rebel T3i with an EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 II zoom lens.
