The Egyptians viewed their gods not as spirits but as intelligences that could be personified in a body. Bast to me is a commentary on Love’s duality: its sensual pleasures AND its willingness to be fiercely protective.

Known as the Cat Goddess, Bast is a beautiful, indulging woman by day who sails across the sky with her father Ra, the Sun God. When the sky reddens at sunset, Ra grows weak and must travel through the Underworld where his enemy the serpent Apep attacks. To protect her father, Bast transforms into a cat to fight in the underworld until Ra rises again at dawn.

Thanks to Monika and my cat for modeling and to Angie Muccillo for reference photos and photographing the finished piece.
