Artist's Description

This dramatic and vibrant storm painting was initially inspired by the sunrise in Reykjavík – in February, when I visited Iceland, sunrise happens at around 10am and sunset at 5pm, so there is very little light during the winter months. The light in Iceland is a captivating display of colours, and I wanted to capture the rich intensity of the sunlight piercing the dark morning sky.

I like to have a lot of freedom when painting and allowing the painting to direct itself almost after a certain point, so as the work began to resemble more of a stormy landscape I embraced it and went with it. My aim is to capture the essence, expression and emotion of a landscape, instead of the literal view. Much of my work is inspired by a memory or experience, and I allow the creative process to translate that into a picture.
