Artist's Description

Captured on a commercial flight from Zilina (Slovakia) to Prague (Czech Republic) at 6 a.m., approx. 6000 m above sea level. To my eye the scene was full of soft details – hills, trees, etc. peaking through the mist and a certain warmth n the colours too. The camera could not replicate this partly due to the aeroplane glass and the distance.

As part of the Solo Exhibition Minimalist Workshop I’ve fine-tuned the pixels in the original NEF file using CS4, Nik Viveza and NikColorEfex. Thanks to all the support and encouragement from the virtual workshop team – particularly Frannie!!

Nikon D200, Sigma 18-200mm. Captured in RAW.
Location: Czech Republic between Slovak border and Prague.

The Making of
Original
Captured on a commercial flight from Zilina (Slovakia) to Prague (Czech Republic) at 6 a.m., approx. 6000 m above sea level. The camera could not replicate the original colours and details due to the aeroplane glass and the distance.

Step 1
I needed to search beneath the mist to find those details that I’d seen that morning. I used Nik’s Viveza 2 to select points such as hills, trees and other objects and increased the tructure and contrast.
Step 2
In my memory, the scene was bathed in muted, warm colours of the fields below. Some areas of the mist were whiter, cooler. I used NikColorEfex 4 filters to darken the upper area slightly, add a reflector reflex and soft gold glow, as well as adjust the curves.
Step 3
I tried a few different ways to remove the smudges from the airplane window and finally used the clone stamp with a large brush and 75% opacity to softly extend the clouds from the top right, fading as I moved into the centre area. I also adjusted the contrasts and tonal values. I saved this as my final version…
Step 4
On a whim, I clicked auto tone and saw that there were actually some blue clouds showing above the mist. So I went back and added a blue tone grad filter and adjusted the three layers: Output of Step 3, auto tones and the grad filter to land here.
Wow, I’m amazed what I could get out of those pixels saved in the original Nikon RAW file.
