One could see her , wrinkled,
Bent by years of active service,
A teethless mouth,
And , on the corner of her eyes,
A hint of a smile.
One could remember,
The smell of her skin,
When a long time before Christmas,
She would make the English Festive Pudding for all the family.
Her hair,
Making a sort of veil around her face.
Now , she was ,
As so many ,
Sitting in an arm chair,
Far too big for her,
Surrounded by others,
Teethless mouths,
White or grey hair ,
Hagard faces ,
Awaiting the final voyage!
Some of them,
Parked in a nursing home,
No family to visit them!
Endless days and nights,
Meals taken much too early,
Put to bed ,without much love!
And then,
In the calm of the night,
One could hear some screams,
And a smell, so strong ,
Floating around each floor of this immense building!
To let go ,
Of this fleeting life!
A fragile leaf,
Falling from a tree,
Faded memories,
Remnants of the past.
A nurse, would go from room to room,
Sometimes with care,
Sometimes ,impatiently,
Longing for the night to fly rapidly!
An other scream,
And the rays of light,
At last, merging into the washed walled rooms!
Sadness to know that there was an other day to go!
Why , my sleep hadnt taken me to the greatest place to rest ?
One would ask.
And this smell!
Sticking to each one.
No perfume or toilet water would take it away!
That smell!
A bell rung somewhere!
Breakfast time!
And then,
The routine would make its way,
By the the window, on a cold and dark morning,
The soul of the dear one ,
Would , just soar to a better place!

Artist's Description

In our societies, the issue of Elderly people’s Home is a very present discussion, for the budget purposes, health issues, with the Health syst em degrading, the ethic point of view (euthanasia of terminally ill patients ….)the longer life span ……..
and the fact that in our “white societies” it is not “normal” for couples and young families to live with the “ancestors”, for many reasons , good or not!
In France, we try to have structures taking care of the elderly at home, but in some areas it is not accessible.
Families too , are not staying and working in the same region as used to be the case!
So the families are exploded.
And there are many more areas of thoughts to consider as well!
