This is a photograph of a sand sculpture which was taken at the 2011 Creepy Crawlies Exhibition in Frankston, Victoria. The sculpture depicts a magnifying glass looking close up at germs on a piece of Vegemite toast.

Creepy Crawlies was the theme for Sandstorm Events’ annual Sand Sculpting Australia in 2011, and in 2012 the theme will be Toytopia.

It is a fantastic exhibition on the foreshore at Frankston, which displays the work of the best sculptors from around the world. Artists from the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and the UK, to Singapore, Canada and the USA join with their Aussie workmates to form a team of 21 artists.

These creative and very talented people worked tirelessly for nearly 3 weeks to bring into being enormous yet finely detailed and lifelike sculptures that showed the weird and wonderful world of Creepy Crawlies.

From beetles, bugs and butterflies, to spiders, slugs and scorpions, the tiny creatures that inhabit our lives were magnified and amplified in giant sand sculptures. Delicate dragonflies and enchanting ladybirds mingled with bed bugs, fleas and other things that make you itch and your skin crawl!
