I shot this picture at Los Barrios dog shelter in southern Spain on the 31st of Oct 2012. The dog is a beautiful, abandoned female podenco. She was pregnant when found.
Los Barrios has about 200 abandoned dogs and this mom is one of them. Most of the dogs are just kicked out of their homes as people in Spain think animals have no soul and can be treated like lifeless objects. Many animals have no hope but this lucky dog has a chance now for being rehomed.
Los Barrios shelter used to be a brutal and horrible killing station but things changed three years ago when a German lady of a local charity decided to start to help the dogs. The charity started to buy the food for the dogs, take care of the vet treatment, vaccinations and most importantly finding homes for them.
Since that day no more dogs have been killed unless too old, too ill or too aggressive to be rehomed.
One of my dogs, Annie, is from Los Barrios and I have a charity here in Finland called Dog Force One. We help the volunteers at the shelter to care for the dogs by collecting donated food and stuff from my country Finland. I send them over regularly by truck. This fall only I have collected and shipped over 30 cubic meters of food and gear. It means thousands of kilos of food. The 200 dogs eat about 80 kg of kibble a day, so the food is always needed.

When you want to help someone or work for a good cause distance is NOT a problem. :)
This time I visited the shelter I brought along 340 kg of food and dog house plus a reporter and a pro photographer and we also made an article about the shelter, my charity and the dogs. :)
