Artist's Description

“And they thanked him for his loyalty by burning his face and leaving him to die.”

I was in Spain in June 2010. The purpose of my trip was to help the abandoned dogs by delivering food, medications, treats and other things needed. I was also going to be a flight escort for a few dogs flying over to Finland to their new homes.

During my stay I visited a few dog shelters including Triple A shelter near Marbella. Triple A is a private shelter which is trying to rehome and treat abandoned and maltreated dogs and cats, and educate people about the good animal keeping.

In Spain there has been a law against cruelty to animals since 2003 but to this date many, many people have no clue about it. The dogs are worthless in that country. Every day dogs (old dogs, puppies, small dogs, big dogs, just about any breed) are found in the trash emanciated, beaten up or injured, or dead. They are thrown out of the window of a moving car in the middle of the highway, shot and left to die on the fields, driven over by a car or, well, you can just pick any cruel thing and it has been done to dogs in Spain by human beings.

So, I went to Triple A shelter, and walked around in the area greeting the poor dogs in every cage with treats. Finally I looked into this one cage. There he was. The saddest, the most miserable and the most heartbreaking creature I have ever seen. He was laying on the concrete floor completely still. His coat was rough and flakey. His face looked terrible and very badly hurt. He could barely move his eyelids. He was also very skinny. I could feel him crying even though he didn’t make a sound. So was I. Crying. In front of his cage.

I learned that the dog’s name was Marlon Brando, he was around 1 year old, mixed breed boy, and that he had been found on the streets smelling petrol and severely burned. Someone had burned his face and his body! Can you imagine! What kind of a person sets a living animal on fire? Did he try to burn the dog to death? Oh, dear Lord, what is happening in these peoples minds?

Despite his horrible experiences and injuries Marlon Brando got better. He did not have to give up life because of the angels in Triple A. The vets, the keepers and the volunteers of the shelter took very good care of him, and slowly he started to recover. It is amazing that a dog can be friendly and loveable after going thru this sort of a hell! He is a nice dog, and currently looking for a loving home which he indeed deserves.

This is how his face looks today:

UPDATE 16Nov2010 Marlon Brando has got very lucky and has got a home in Germany!

This poem I dedicate to Marlon Brando and all his kind.

Dear God please send me somebody who’ll care!
I’m tired of running, I’m sick with despair.
My body is aching, it’s so racked with pain.
And Dear God I pray as I run in the rain,

That someone will love me and give me a home.
A warm cozy bed I can call my own
My last owner neglected me and chased me away
To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.

But now God I’m tired and hungry and cold.
And I’m afraid that I’ll never grow old.
They’ve chased me with sticks and hit me with stones
While I run in the streets just looking for bones!

I’m not really bad God, please help if you can.
For I have become just a “VICTIM OF MAN!”
I’m wormy Dear God and I’m ridden with fleas
and All that I want is an owner to please!

If you find one for me God, I’ll try to be good
I won’t run away and I’ll do as I should.
I don’t think I’ll make it too long on my own,
Cause I’m getting so weak and I’m so all alone.

Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry,
Cause I’m so afraid God, that I’m gonna die!
And I’ve got so much love and devotion to give,
That I should be given a new chance to live.

So Dear God PLEASE, PLEASE answer my prayer
And send me somebody who WILL really care…
