brownie

two boys climbed a tree
and snaked along separate branches
not to tempt their fate or defy authority
but for the joy created from their endeavours

two boys jumped off a bridge
into a muddy river
pushing off the dirty bed
and surging up laughing at it all

though fate be tempted it does not always intervine
in a way immediately expected
though boys be equal in many things
brownies lungs were not as mine

now his place be taken to an extent
by others older like me
to be sure they have lost as well as us all
but these things remain tightly sealed

then once in a while with a beer in hand
you sit together and meander
and things come to mind that seem long forgotten
through smog and adulthood and time

and the only thing mentioned is a halting question
why does the sun always shine in your memories
