flint rocks

there’s something to be said when
all our words come out wrong
but we can’t help but speak
in hopes of making it work out right.

there’s something to be said when
we consider slip-ups to be stepping stones,
arguments the anchors that stabilize us
in the topsy-turvy sea we ride.

while we’re bruising and bleeding ‘cause
all our words came out wrong,
we are healing, feeling our way back
to the basics we’ve learned between us.

we’ve been warned off and back,
away from the trouble of our intensity,
but we can’t help but speak
fighting words, growing words.

and we make it work, I think,
because we know that in the long run
our interests have been placed
in hopes of making it work out right.
