After the Wreck

I dreamed that you were gone
snatched from the night
erased from us

and I fell hard, love,
my knees burned to liquid

Sometimes your presence is so still
falling breath on my skin
But in the thickness of that dream
the weight of your loss
crippled my eyes
leading me to a dark mind, wrought with solitude.

On my knees, in this dream,
you were gone from me.

As I awoke, soaked in sweat,
I understood how a dream lives
I saw your father on his knees,
grasping at tangled moments,
unable to wake as I did.

  • fragments of my dream twisting and snapping in my chest,
I pressed a fist against you,
our life reshuffling in the sheets
dream rage creeping out into the morning’s glow

I acknowledged the delicate nature of one’s faith, your mother’s subtle wave good-bye and the fleeting realization that
after the wreck
my soul would scatter like ashes.
