Artist's Description

I have heard people call Mangonui the most picturesque little fishing village in the world. Well no doubt there are plenty of contenders for THAT description, but Mangonui sure is a lovely place.

The main street of this fishing village is right up against the seawall, and half the parking is under the pohutukawa trees that line the water’s edge.

The supermarket (on the right of this painting) is in a historic old building built out on piles. As you shop you can glimpse the tide below the cracks between the floorboards.

Great stuff!

Photographing blue paintings is a trial. No matter how many photos I took, in how many different lights, none of them was right. Finally with the painting gone, I had to do the best with what I had. I ended up stripping the picture into layers and working on each separately, because adjusting for, say, the trees threw the sky out etc. I’ve probably got it as close as I can now to the original.

Acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas. Sold to a collector at Mangonui. See also my artwork of Coopers Beach, a little further to the north in Doubtless bay.
