Artist's Description

Here is a huge tree in the forest that’s become home to other plants – an enormous Astelia, with fern hanging below. The bushmen used to call these astelias “widow-makers” because if they got really heavy after rains, they could drop and kill a man working underneath.

I saw this tree in the Kaimanawa Forest Park up Clement’s Mill Road and took a photograph. The painting looks different in many ways – the essence of the tree being far more prominent in the painting, but that’s what painting is about.

Acrylic on board. Sold to a collector in Hamilton NZ.
