Artist's Description

Where some might see a man wearing a chain… I see something else.
I’m drawn uncontrollably to the look in his visible eye. Only a tiny sliver of light is allowed into the lower fraction of his eye and it is this small shaft of light that I feel is the most telling aspect of the image. We cannot help but feel that this creature has the ability to take in information at an astonishing rate. It is all but self-evident that this creature has the ability to collect information from his environment and deal with it in a way that perhaps no other creature can. He has the ability to absorb, to dissect, to categorize, to assimilate, to digest and to manipulate information faster than the speed of light. And this sliver of light entering and illuminating his iris suggests that given the slightest opportunity, given the slimmest of hopes, he is capable of greatness. There is a focus, a singularity of purpose and a resolve that is palpable. To bet against that resolve would not seem wise. Whatever the challenge, he will persevere. Whatever the obstacle, he will overcome. Whatever is his desire, it is within his reach. And if beyond the reach of his hands, it is within the powerful grasp of his mind.

The chain that wraps around his neck, I feel is a metaphor of his limitations—which he wears as an adornment. True, he is enslaved by his desires. But it is also his ability to chase, to capture and to satisfy those very ends which make him the prolific creator that he is. Although these desires and these limitations define him in ways, they are not who he is. And although his soul appears imprisoned within the walls of his body, we cannot help but feel that this too is only an impermanent situation. He appears a spirit within a vessel of flesh and bone. We even have the impression that given a change in his will, he could toss off such chains, like a woman might take off her jewelry at the end of an evening.

In this image, Man seems to stand center stage with a hard light that glances off his face… something like a spotlight might do to the main character upon a theatrical stage. All eyes are upon him. For so many reasons, he seems deserving of our attention. He seems surrounded, enveloped by a surreal blue light which suggests not only the deepest waters, but the limitless sky and perhaps even a heaven on Earth. The cut of his face, the set of his jaw, the laser-like stare of his eye, the way the light seems to both accent and also wrap around him, all suggest that in our little story, that in our cosmic play… what stands before us is indeed the main character. We, like all the heavens leaning ever closer, can’t help but wonder: what will He do next?
