Artist's Description

The old church was built in 1876-1877 as “Chalmer’s Church”, a member of the Presbyterian Free Church. The “Free Church” was a breakaway sect from the Presbyterian Church of Scotland—both were Presbyterian, but had some differences that couldn’t be mended.

Dr. James Middlemiss was Chalmer’s first minister and served 35 yrs. Financially burdened by low attendance, the Chalmer’s Church ended services in 1917. The enormous building stood empty for many years until it was converted to living quarters and a pottery shop, operating as “Peter & Nancy’s Pottery” into the 1980s. The building is seemingly once again vacant and is showing signs of neglect and deterioration.
