DARK REFLECTIONS OF A LOST SOUL by JUDY HURST

With eyes wide open the silent darkness consumed the totality of her bare existence. Harmony’s thoughts echoed in horror of the terminal mistake the repetitious screams of sorry would never erase. Suddenly, a spectrum of light, forming a pinnacle through her dark tortured soul appeared. Was this the providential answer to the agony or more torment? With a slow curious anticipation of relief, she gazed into the light and beheld her frail white body, that was encased and arrayed in beautiful pink puffed silk. Her long shining blond hair framed her lovely, but overly made up face. Her soft pale hands were perfectly crisscrossed upon a white taffeta dress. In a blink of an eye, the circular spectrum changed to an unexpected morbid view. Tears flowed from her shadowed eyes as she froze, watching all the people she loved, huddled close to the encasement of her past form.Breathless, she reached into the light, trying to comfort the mourning faces she longed to touch. Quietly and just as quick as it came, the light faded back into the dismal void. Alone, the chilling darkness consumed her in a deafening quiet. Voices of the familiar faces rang out in the shadows, calling her name. Multiple streams of faceless noise rushed through her soul, begging, Harmony please come home.Harmony sank back into the deafening screams in her soul sharply stabbing her with bloody pains of guilt. Harmony’s confusion paralyzed her as questions echoed in her soul; there were no answers to the mindless torture she had inflicted. Why had she not realized the abomination that was slowly seeping into her reality? Where is this lonely dark existence that encompasses her being? Will she be doomed to this shadowy transparent form? Can she ever touch the tearful faces of the ones she loved and longed to see? Multiple unanswered questions stabbed at her, smothering her illumination. Before the infinite consumption of her soul could take place the pinnacle darts through her and the terror of the circular light began to transform. The spectrum formed a different feeling this time. Harmony, unable to keep her curious eyes from focusing on the prevailing scene and once again gazed into the light.Barely recognizing the face that appeared this time Harmony is fixated on the familiar image. I-I know that young girl, she is so frail, yet beautiful, but why is she crying? A sudden shock, like a bolt of lightning shattered; causing a disorderly combination of elements identifying what was lost and distinctions abruptly blended. Oh no! Heather, can you feel my sorrow? She reaches forward, extending her hand into the circle trying to lovingly comfort her sibling. Can you feel my yearning to be there with you, to hug away whatever is hurting you? Abruptly, the light slowly begins to fade and quickly dissipates.NO! WAIT! Please Come back, Harmony shrieked grasping desperately at her loved one, but to no avail Then the realization pierced every fiber of Harmony’s being, her memory shattering her soul in blood stained grief. Heather’s unconsolable pain had been caused by the one she loves and longs to hug and feel the warmth of her solacement. Harmony’s heartsick little sister always pattered herself after her idol, the sister that could always make her smile and wisp away any sorrow. The pain that raced through her being was unbearable. Harmony spiraled into spiritual destitution and strenuously regained enough of herself to gaze into the light again. The quiet was shattered by a sudden scream! Harmony quenched the pool of darkness and the circled formed as she regained her thoughts. She peered anxiously into the colorful spectrum. Laughter rang out all around her, echoing joyously. Did they forget about me, so soon? Again, she could not discern the faces in the bright luminous circle and the rejoicing came from children dancing and singing around the most beautiful tree she had ever seen. The lights glistened in a rapturous glow, filling her dark soul with an unfamiliar warmth. Heather is that you? It looks like you. Why do you look so old? Questions swarmed her thoughts, buzzing uncontrollably harshly stinging her soul for the answers. Forced by her own curiosity, she lunged with all her being into the brilliance of the light. She extended her hand forward, this time to her amazement, she felt the cold sweat of flesh entwined in her fingers. Breathless, she returned the warm smile from her loving sister. This is the feeling she had longed for and the miracle she remembered, before whatever happened to put her where ever she was.The elation she felt at that moment caused a flashback of the accident. I love you too, she whispered. as she began to rise. We will never forget you Harmony, she heard as all life’s questions were answered in an inconceivable peace and quiet.
