Artist's Description

Autumn in Alaska.
Near Eagle River, Alaska.
17 September 2007.
Nikon D70s.

Autumn in southcentral Alaska is quite startling and brilliant. Being native to Florida, I’m not quite used to the idea of Autumn, much less Winter. So try to imagine my first Autumn in Alaska last year, watching the thick greens transition to oversaturated reds and yellows — before the blue of winter took over and dominated the landscape.

I remember driving through Eagle River Valley with my wife, on the western edge of the Chugach Mountains, and simply being stunned by the colors. It was more light of a different sort than I knew what to do with. The green trees were turning a thick and radiant yellow and the grassy slopes of the mountains burned into a dark red hue. Snow anticipated the coming winter from higher elevations, as if waiting to creep down the mountainsides.

It was overwhelming.

And then? Then, it was gone. The greens, reds and yellows disappeared beneath an ocean of white and blue as Winter set in for its long visit in southcentral Alaska.

I look forward to Autumn this year. I look forward to seeing those colours once again. A lush, rich, dense, and chaotic dance of colors and contrast.

Note: This colors and contrasts in this image have been exaggerated for effect.
