Artist's Description

Wood frog.
Rana sylvatica.
Far North Bicentennial Park; Anchorage, Alaska.
10 August 2008.
Nikon D70s.

This is one of the very few species of amphibians to reside in the state of Alaska. Further, and most impressively, this species, the wood frog, is the only amphibian to actually range above the Arctic Circle. Rather impressive, considering they essentially freeze solid over the winter… Although, truth be told, that’s not completely true. The wood frog is sort of freeze-resistant, processing and using glucose essentially as an anti-freeze agent. Or something technical like that. I’m not sure I understand it. And I’m a mammal.

(If only there was a snake living up here that could do the same…)
