Artist's Description

Florida green watersnake.
Nerodia floridana.
Palm Island Park; Mt. Dora, Florida.
20 June 2007.
Nikon D70s.

This is a magnificent Florida green watersnake, a large, robust and non-venomous animal moderately common in certain regions of the Floridian peninsula. Of all of Florida’s non-venomous watersnakes, the Florida green watersnake is most certainly the most “aggressively defensive” when caught or cornered. They are large and they can bite hard. Very hard. Uncomfortably hard. BUT, in order to get bitten by one of these tanks, you have to corner and capture them first. Thus, they really aren’t a threat to anybody — except to those who are trying to catch them!

A snake to be admired and not feared!
