A CHRISTMAS WISH IN THE MIND OF A CHILD

I wonder deep in
the hurricane snow
Leaving squalid marks like
Bird feet patterns closely resembling
An ostrich stretching
The smell of chimney ash and
Kindling twigs
Flaking across the solid pond
Born from the ice flows
North and west of the mountains

Damp in the chill
the fingers recede
like clipping shore lines
Never a sound
As slow and light as the
Bend of an elm or birch
In the new age woods
Foaming with desire
Refreshed and pausing
in the last season
of the year’s reign

In small time the
Color will change
The bricks of water will lose
Their luster
Beams will float
Above the roof line

Where stood the tallest chimney
Whose great plumes
Reached up and then down
Running with the wind
Until edge of day
Ran into the far wood
Leaving no path
to light
Or branch to hang
Or horse to follow
Or sleigh to ride

For in a moment’s silence broke the
Words
Atop the chimney mast
As its fury got smaller
And then nothing

The house was alive and
Now will sleep

Children come to view
First light
The magic of
His work
