SO MANY YEARS AGO

If off in the distance
I saw a light
Would you see it too
Without a name or
Place
We named things didn’t we
Like the scant sounds or
The scent of the pine bark
Slowly cooking in the
Embers

If I heard the rattle of a
Broken sail
Tides against the wind
Would you feel the
Sweeping flush of the
Waves
Crashing inside me
Holding the lines
In frigid harmony

If I call in the dark
For I fear that place
Would you hear or see the tone
And know
Or would you and I alone in
Fields splendid
Awake late one
Morning with the dewey
Frost smothering our bodies
And see the faint glow
Of a star dying
And the embers gone
And the bare tress standing
And hear my voice
Together

If I adored your hair
That floated above me
and the sinewy strands
that clung to me
would you too remember

I miss too the
Small words that
Laughed at me
Now
Stilled by that emptiness
that left me behind
like that small child running
in the yard
abandoned
so many years ago

SO MANY YEARS AGO
