South

“Be still, Samuel!” came the gutteral growl from behind him. Samuel was uncomfortable in his restricted position. Beads of perspiration dotted his upper lip as he struggled to concentrate; to block out the voice of his tormentor.

“You little worm, you can’t do it, can you?” The voice was closer, hissing in his left ear. Samuel stared straight ahead, saying nothing. The leather strap dug into his bound body, chafing where the skin was bare. He took a deep breath and looked down at the table in front of him, mortified at the tears welling in his eyes. He allowed his imagination to take him briefly to the slow, wide waiting river that beckoned beyond his prison.

The demon stood in front of him, robed in black; licking his lips greedily at the thought of the punishment he was about to mete out to his victim.

Samuel took another deep breath, determined to be strong in the face of his enemy. His free hand trembled and then clenched into a fist in an effort to show no fear. The unfairness of his situation struck him. He was the only one targeted by this monster; this everyday reality who haunted his dreams in the darkness of night.

“Come on then,” came the jeering, jarring voice. “Show me; show me your puny efforts; show me how pathetic you really are; show us all that you are nothing, that you will never be anything, but the spawn of the devil!”

It was enough. He would not, could not take it any more.

Samuel suddenly stood and struck his antagonist hard in the solar plexus. Freeing the leather strap that bound his left arm to his body, he scribbled on the paper that lay on the desk in front of him before crumpling and dropping it onto the curled up, winded form on the floor: “My name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens, and I am proud to be a south-paw!”

Turning on his heel, Samuel walked away from his teacher and the schoolhouse, towards the Mississippi and his future.
