The Shaman

Roanoke Island was a fearful place to be in the early days. The ships had gone back to England for supplies and there were mixed feelings amongst the natives. It was not a comfortable place to be in.

Many of the tribesmen wanted these whites to be driven off the face of the lands while still others felt empathy for them. A great war started amongst the groups which gave the settlers an uneasy awareness of the whole situation. A great panic started within the settlement until one day a native showed up and spent a few months with them. While he stayed the settlers were safe from the war that had broken out.

Then the settlers started to dissapear one by one. The war had gone to the shamans who used their magic to settle the score with these strangers. The native that had stayed at the colony was also a shaman. His name was Cro. He had told them that he would do his best to save them. Still the colonists dissapeared one by one and a great panic siezed them, so they gathered to shaman and killed him. Then the fear started to grow even more violently.

Little by little each of the colonists got sicker and sicker. At night they began to see the shaman appear in the moonlight, passing by the windows of their houses. Again the settlers would show up missing one by one. No one knew what had happened to them and the sick just got sicker with no relief in sight. Soon there was just a few settlers left.

A great storm blew in one night and the remaining settlers heard the war cries all around them. Thinking that this was their last night alive one of the settlers carved out the tribes name on the tree near the fort. Then all hell broke loose. Into the lightening they saw the shaman’s form in unseemingly great distance apart with each stroke. They were screaming and running in sheer panic as the settlers started dissappearing again and again. Each time the shaman’s face was shown. When the last two were left one carved out CRO into the nearby tree. Then the shaman’s face appeared before them.

Artist's Description

It’s very hard to make a short story do what you want it to, but I tried anyways. I picked Roanoke Island’s “Lost Colony” as the theme just to add my two cents worth to the mystery of what had happened to them. What the hell, it’s Halloween. LOL
