Artist's Description

This is a very small castle that is in a location of very hard access in a small hill deep inside of a valley system. Initially built to protect a small village called Arouce (today part of the Lousã town), this castle was a very important peice in the defense of the christian lands on the Reconquista process due to it is a castle that stays close to one very important city (Coimbra) that was once the Portuguese capital and as well because it is the most southern fortification of a mountain chain system called Lousã-Estrela which “cuts” Portugal in two (from east to west) almost in the totality of it’s territory.

It is unknown when was the castle built, but there is a reference of its existance already in 943 on an arab contract when the area was occupied by the Arabs. Since 23rd June 1910 it is by law considered to be a national monument. Just next to the castle there is a small river called “Arouce” and on the other side of the river you can be in this place.
