Artist's Description

This tower is part of the original city walls as a defense tower and as main entry door into and outside of the city. It was built in the 10th century though there are proof that the first fortification built there was built in the 4th century. This door was known as “The Viana door” due to it’s location (in the south side of the city) that was the begining of the road to Viana do Castelo. Later on, in the 17th century it recieved the clock and from then on the tower got known as “The clock tower”. Today (and after some renovations) the tower is of public access and works as the town’s museum.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get any info on the surrounding buildings which obviouslly were built much later. The only thing I know is that the one on the left is a bank…
