Artist's Description

This is the very beginning of the Stations of the Via Crúcis (also known as Via Sacra in other places of Portugal) wich is “Stations of the Cross” in the english language. This fabulous Via Crúcis is at the Capela do Calvário’s stairway and it is not by chance that such a big Via Crúcis is there. Capela do Calvário is portuguese for Chapel of the Calvary/Suffering. This means that this chapel (wich stands on the top) is dedicated to the hapenings that Jesus Christ went through since He was arrested until the very moment He is buried.

The Via Crúcis is a very important part of the Catholic belief, especially by Easter time. It contains 14 episodes (a.k.a. stations) and each cross stands for one of them.

Unfortunately I don’t have any information about the chapel it self…
