Het Blauwe Meer (The Blue Lake) is a small nature reserve in the province of Drenthe, close to Hoogersmilde. It’s part of the Leggelderveld, a beautiful changing area with forest, dry and wet moor, grasslands, sandpits and turfquary. The Blue Lake was formed after the sand was used for a stonemill in Hoogersmilde. This started in 1905. The area was given this name because of the beautiful blue colour of the lake, which is due to the occurance of a certain mineral, called glauconite.
There are a few rambling trails in this area. In the summer lots of people come here for a swim.
