Artist's Description

A Lisu man in the hills of northern Thailand cleans a pig he has butchered. He has singed the hair on a fire and will cut the animal into portions, throwing away only the contents of the digestive tract. He will then offer some of the pork to his ancestor spirits and the sky spirits before eating it with his family. Most pigs raised by hilltribe families are killed for ceremonial reasons as well as for their meat.
Taken in 1978, north of Chiang Mai, on kodachrome slide film.
