Artist's Description

An old Shan woman collected these edible fungi, called ‘hep buak’ in Shan, near her village in the mountains of Mae Hong Son province Thailand. ‘Hep buak’ means termite mushroom, and according to the collector, they exist because a long time ago a man slipped in the forest and his penis went into a hole in a termite mound and broke off. Quaint, and unabashed, as many Shan legends are.
