Artist's Description

Shans in northwest Thailand call this edible fungus "hep nom sao’ or ’maiden’s breast’. This elder, Maetao Moong, is her village’s expert on wild foods, which are major supplements to cultivated rice. She said the name came from the spongy feel of the fungus. The scientific name is Calvatia cyathiformis (thank you Carla and Britt from FUNGI magazine)….and it has a nice flavour.
