Artist's Description

Unusual rock formations stand upright on the flat surfaces of Hanging Rock.

Hanging Rock is a long-extinct volcano, formed when lava blew through a vent in the earth about 6 million years ago, and now rises 105 metres on the surrounding plain. High soda content in the solid lava and the action of rainwater has created the unusual rock formations, known to geologists as soda trachyte.
