Artist's Description

Buteo jamaicensis

Pervasive and trainable, this large Buteo is by far the most common bird of prey used by falconers in North America. The law requires that falconers only take passage hawks, which are on their own but under one year of age. The falconers prefer young, malleable raptors. You can’t teach an old hawk new tricks.

You can tell by this Red-tail’s iris that it would be off limits to falconers. Immatures have yellowish irises.

Canon 7D, EF 400mm f5.6 L, 1/1650secs, f5.6, ISO 200
