Artist's Description

The Great Wall of China was built to keep out the invading Mongols. For this reason, the steps were purposely built uneven, so enemy soldiers hurrying down the steps at night would stumble and fall. The Chinese defenders, knowing the steps well, would trot up and down the wall with very little trouble, meanwhile picking off the invaders with spears and arrows. This section, a short drive from Beijing, has been restored. There are very few level sections on the wall – most of it involves climbing the steps or coming down. It’s debatable which is the more difficult.
