Artist's Description

Part of the concubines’ residence in the Imperial Winter Palace in Beijing. Most of The Chinese emperors used to have hundreds of concubines, as well as their official wife, or wives. Sometimes a concubine would become famous and take her position as second only to the official wife. The residence of the eunuchs was nearby, and their duty was to project the concubines. Nowadays, of course, both residences are empty, but these buildings still speak of the power and grandeur of the old emperors. Some people would say that politically, nothing much has changed in China.
