Artist's Description

This is ‘Donkey’ He was given to me and my mother when he was 6 hrs old, saved from the abattoir where he would have been hit on the head with a stick if the farmer that knew us wasn’t there, knowing how soft we are and that we would raise him.

He was tiny, and without a mother, we did not expect him to survive long, but feeding him milk from a Smirnoff ice bottle, he grew strong, this photo was shot during one of my regular walks with him through the wood behind my then house.

He grew with my two Jack Russell’s and frankly, i am surprised he didn’t wind up barking…

When weaned onto grass properly, we took him back to that farmer, who owned Balwin lambs so that he could be with other sheep. Unfortunately, the farmer thought he died of Fly-strike only a couple of weeks later.

Chasing me on my bike through blue bell woods and leaping over brooks with my dogs though, he couldn’t have had a better childhood – especially considering his would be fate.

You should have seen the expressions on the other dog walkers faces though when they got close enough to exclaim “that is a strange dog” =)
