Outback Feast

Black patches of native vultures
Scavenge along the smorgasboard.
And to whet the appetite
Blackboard specials of the day:
Entrée of Skippy’s relations- red and grey.
Main is long eared furry bites or lamb chops.
And to finish off,
Desert features our feathered friends
And feral kids too.

The platter stretches like a black snake,
Winding its way through vast nothingness
For hundreds of kilometres and more.
Patrons are treated to the view-
Red dirt lakes,
Oceans of saltbush.

They enjoy their feast immensely
It’s all devoured by lunch time.
But an overnight slaughter
By the big rigs
Ensures that the menu is available
When daylight breaks
For the feast to recommence.
In the a la carte dining of
The great Australian outback.
